Hi Kids!

Ok, here we are - in the beginning stages of a class blog setting. You cannot create your own posts, but you can comment until your hearts content. I encourage you, strongly, to add meaningful articles, respond to articles, and to each other, in the comments section.

I will create a new post for each Current Events class that we have.

This post is around our conversation on the events in Paris, IS, global terrorism and related topics. Here are some articles that I've found helpful and that your classmates have share with me. Please feel free to check these out and add your own!

AFTER PARIS:

A piece that David Remnick about exiles in NY from Raqqa who talk about life under IS:

Adam Gopnik's excellent (and graphic) piece on Paris after the attacks, focusing on the extreme apocalypticism of IS:

IS's "official statement" about the Paris bombings, This does a better job than anything in communicating just what the group is all about:

Experience of the Syrian Refugees Process to Enter The United States:

THE ORIGINS OF IS:

The single best piece I have read detailing the confusing and contradictory origins of IS, written by an anonymous NATO official:
http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2015/aug/13/mystery-isis/

The very comprehensive March Atlantic cover story about the fascistic and apocalyptic goals of IS:
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/03/what-isis-really-wants/384980/

The author of the cover story shared his feelings about the response to the piece:
http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/02/what-isis-really-wants-reader-response-atlantic/385710/

A summary and review of a book about IS, focusing on Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi:

FRONTLINE ON IS:

Probably the single best video summary on the rise of IS, broadcast last October (it might be worth it to play the entire thing as the first step to getting everyone on the same page about the organization):
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/rise-of-isis/

A brand new report on IS's spread into Afganistan, with a focus on the recruitment and training of children:

Global tensions grow as Turkey shoots down a Russian military plane they claim to have been in their airspace, while Russia claims it was still in Syrian airspace.

I think this article is very interesting and beneficial for those of you who chose gentrification as your topic for the action plan project:

The united states has deployed a "specialized expeditionary targeting force" of ground troops to Iraq with the goal of conducting raids against key ISIS targets with help from Iraqi security forces and kurdish peshmergas.
