- This week we will doing a panel presentation based on our books. (yay!) You do not have additional reading this week, but you should be preparing for your panel. Panels will take place during CLASS 10.
- The expectation for panel is that you:
- Are an expert in your text. You are referring specifically to evidence from your text to support your ideas.
- You are able to illustrate and respond to: Who does the American carceral system serve? Who does the American carceral system harm?
- You are able to facilitate discussion among your peers (both on the panel and in the class)

2. Watch The Central Park Five (available on Netflix). Once you've completed watching the documentary complete a 1-2 page write up on your reactions (15 pts)
3. Listen to This American Life: What I Did For Love and the amazing accompanying music by Lin Manuel Miranda

- What are three pre-conceptions, questions, thoughts, or observations you have before reading the rest of the book (based on her introduction)?
- Early in Chapter One, Ehrenreich notes that, in terms of low-wage work, “the want ads are not a reliable measure of the actual jobs available at any particular time.” Explain why this is so.
- At one point, Ehrenreich details the living conditions of her fellow workers at the Hearthside. Reviewing these arrangements, explain how each set-up compares with the author’s own “$500 efficiency” quarters
- On her first—and last—day of housekeeping in Key West, Ehrenreich is met by a manager who addresses her as “babe” and gives her “a pamphlet emphasizing the need for a positive attitude.” When and where else, throughout the book, does the author encounter cheap talk or hollow slogans in her endeavors as a low-wage worker? What purposes might such empty language serve? Why is it so prevalent?
